Overlooking Kim Il Sung Square with traditional Korean rooftops and monumental scale, the Grand People's Study House (인민대학습당) is one of Pyongyang's most distinctive and intellectually significant buildings. As the national library and ideological learning center of North Korea, it plays a central role in public education, cultural life, and the study of Juche thought.

Purpose and Function

Completed in 1982 to commemorate the 70th birthday of President Kim Il Sung, the Grand People's Study House was designed to be more than just a library. It serves as a place where Pyongyang residents from all walks of life can deepen their understanding of science, literature, and especially the ideological foundations of the DPRK.

With over 30 million books, access to digital archives, as well as language courses, the Grand People's Study House blends classic study spaces with modern tech. Inside, there are reading halls, lecture rooms, computer labs, audiovisual centers, and spaces for guided learning.

Architecture and Layout

On the outside, the Grand People's Study House shows off traditional Korean elements like tiled eaves and curved roofs, combined with features found in socialist architecture such as its large granite columns, marble staircases, and wide corridors. This bold mix of styles, unique to the DPRK, makes it one of Pyongyang's most striking buildings. Perched right above the square, it's also one of the city's most photogenic spots, offering sweeping views of Kim Il Sung Square and the Taedong River.

True to its name, the Grand People's Study House is massive, covering over 100,000 square meters across 10 stories, standing nearly 64 meters tall. Inside, with around 600 rooms, you'll find 21 reading rooms and 17 lecture halls divided into 10 sections based on their focus. Thanks to its monumental size, it can accommodate up to 10,000 visitors every day.

Symbolic Role

Beyond its educational function, the Grand People’s Study House is an ideological landmark. It embodies the DPRK’s emphasis on self-reliance through knowledge (Juche), and reflects the state's goal of cultivating a well-educated, ideologically grounded population.

All citizens are encouraged to use the space for personal development, and visits from workers, farmers, and soldiers are part of routine educational efforts. The building also hosts foreign delegations and special lectures on state anniversaries and political milestones.
