Kim Il Sung Square

The Heart of Pyongyang and the DPRK

At the center of Pyongyang's public and political life lies Kim Il Sung Square (김일성광장), a vast, open space that has become one of the most recognized locations in the DPRK. Situated along the west bank of the Taedong River, Kim Il Sung Suare represents the heart of the capital and the entire country.

Constructed in 1954, just a year after the Korean War ended, Kim Il Sung Square was part of the postwar rebuilding of Pyongyang. Named after the country's founding leader, it was designed not only to honor his legacy, but also to serve as a gathering point for mass mobilizations, cultural celebrations, and political expression.

Covering over 75,000 square meters, the square can accommodate well over 100,000 people. It's been the backdrop to countless historic events, including military parades, national day celebrations, and mass rallies — many of which have been broadcast around the world.

Layout and Architecture

The square is flanked by a series of monumental buildings in traditional socialist-modernist style, many of which serve as key institutions of the state:

Grand People's Study House The eastern edge of the square is dominated by this traditional Korean-roofed structure, which functions as the country's central library and Pyongyang's learning center.

Government Ministries and Party Headquarters Buildings lining the perimeter include important state offices and the headquarters of the Workers' Party of Korea.

Cultural Museums Also located nearby are institutions such as the Korean Central History Museum and art galleries that showcase the country's art and history.

A notable feature of the square is its large granite tiles and minimalist layout, designed to emphasize the scale and power of the events held there, from tightly choreographed military marches to synchronized student rallies.

Cultural and Political Role

In addition to being a public space in Pyongyang's city center, Kim Il Sung Square also serves as the stage on which the DPRK presents itself to the world. On major holidays, especially the Birth Anniversary of President Kim Il Sung (April 15), it becomes the site of elaborate state ceremonies, including fireworks, live music, and collective performances.

The square is also used for mass dances, which are sometimes open to foreign travelers to observe or even join. When not being used for official functions, locals may use the space informally — young people can be seen rollerblading or practicing group routines.

Visiting Kim Il Sung Square

For most visitors on a Taedong itinerary, Kim Il Sung Square is one of the first big stops in Pyongyang. Standing in the square lets you take in its grandiosity, but the best view is from across the Taedong River on top of the Juche Tower. From there, you can see the square's full symmetry and design from above and really appreciate how it all comes together.

Tour Etiquette

Photography is generally permitted during visits to Kim Il Sung Square, but it’s important to follow your guide’s instructions closely. The square is considered a politically significant site, and guests are expected to be mindful of their surroundings, especially during official events or ceremonies.
