Dominating the skyline of Pyongyang from Mansudae, or Mansu Hill (Mansu literally means "ten-thousand years of longevity"), the Mansudae Grand Monument is one of the DPRK’s most important and iconic landmarks. Featuring massive bronze statues of President Kim Il Sung and General Kim Jong Il, this site serves as a national focal point for commemoration, reverence, and revolutionary pride. For visitors, the monument offers some insight into the political culture of the DPRK.

Historical Background

The original monument was unveiled in April 1972 to mark President Kim Il Sung's 60th birthday. At the time, the site featured a single 20-meter bronze statue of the President, shown in a dignified and serious pose, facing westward with one arm outstretched. Behind the statue stands the Korean Revolution Museum, along with a massive mosaic mural of Mount Paektu, a symbol of Korean nationality since ancient times, and more recently, revolutionary struggle.

In April 2012, a second 20-meter statue of General Kim Jong Il was added, shortly after his passing and in honor of Kim Il Sung's centenary. At the same time, the statue of Kim Il Sung was updated to reflect his later image — smiling and clad in a suit. Kim Jong Il's statue was initially shown in a formal coat but was later revised to depict him in his trademark parka.

On either side of the bronze statues, dynamic group sculptures, each about 5 meters high, depict scenes of Korean people in action: soldiers, farmers, workers, and students united in their struggle and effort to build a strong, socialist Korea.

Locals leaving Mansudae Grand Monument after paying respects to the leaders.

The Mansudae Grand Monument is a solemn space in the DPRK's political culture visited regularly by citizens, particularly on national holidays, to pay their respects by bowing and laying flowers at the foot of the statues. It is also common for newlyweds to take wedding photos here, and for students and soldiers to visit as part of patriotic education programs.

Location and Nearby Sights

The Mansudae Grand Monument is located in central Pyongyang, elevated on Mansu Hill and easily visible from various points across the city. It is often one of the first stops on any Pyongyang itinerary.

  • Mansudae Art Theatre – a venue for state cultural performances and music.

Visitor Etiquette

Because the Grand Monument is a serious space and not considered a tourist attraction, guests are expected to pay respect to the leaders should they choose to visit. A visit to the Mansudae Grand Monument comes with important cultural responsibilities. All Taedong Tours guests are fully briefed before arrival, but the following guidelines apply:

Dress respectfully: Men should wear long pants and closed-toe shoes, and women should wear long skirts or trousers. Avoid casual wear like shorts, flip-flops, or tank tops.

Bow and (optional) offer flowers: Visitors typically approach the monument in silence and bow in unison with the group. Flowers are available for purchase nearby, and those who wish to do so may lay them at the statues as a sign of respect.

Photo etiquette: You may take photos, but you must photograph both statues in full. Close-ups, selfies, or partial shots are strongly discouraged. Tripods and overly casual poses are not appropriate.

If you'd prefer not to pay respects at the statues for any reason, just let your Taedong guides know—you're welcome to stay on the bus while the rest of the group visits the monument.
