The World's Largest Stadium and a Centerpiece of Pyongyang's Skyline

Dominating Rungra Island on the Taedong River, the Rungrado 1st of May Stadium, commonly referred to as the May Day Stadium, stands as a monumental symbol of the DPRK's dedication to sport, performance, and national solidarity. Inaugurated on May 1, 1989 to commemorate International Workers' Day, it is perhaps best known for being venue of the famous Mass Games.
Design and Capacity

The stadium is famed for its unique magnolia blossom-shaped roof, formed by 16 arching segments that create a bold, symmetrical crown above the structure. Rising more than 60 meters high and stretching across eight levels, the complex covers over 207,000 square meters, making it one of the largest stadiums in the world by floor area.
The central field spans 22,500 square meters, making it suitable for mass games, soccer, and various kinds of ceremonial events. Whether viewed from the riverbanks or the sky, its design is undeniably grand.

With a seating capacity of approximately 114,000, the May Day Stadium is widely regarded as the largest stadium in the world. Over the years, it has hosted a wide range of major events, including:
- The 13th World Festival of Youth and Students in July, 1989;
- International soccer matches involving the DPRK national team;
- National sports competitions and military parades;
- The iconic Mass Games, where tens of thousands of gymnasts, dancers, and musicians come together in a stunning display of synchronized movement and artistry;
