West Coast Flames, Clams, and Soju
Few culinary experiences in the DPRK generate as much curiosity as gas clams, also known as petrol clams. Found primarily on the west coast, especially around Nampo, this unique cooking method turns a simple seafood meal into a fiery, hands-on event that's become a favorite among visitors and locals alike.
What Is It?
In short: gasoline, fire, and clams.

Fresh Yellow Sea clams are laid out upside down in a circle, sprayed evenly with gasoline from a punctured water bottle, and set alight. The flames cook the clams inside their shells for 5-10 minutes, giving them a lightly charred, smoky flavor while sealing in the natural brininess of the sea. Once the fire dies, it's time to pry open the clams and feast! As crazy as it sounds, the result is surprisingly tasty, especially when washed down with some cold soju, and it's safe when done properly.

Usually, your driver or guide will manage the fire while you get to sit back and sip. But you're more than welcome to help.
Where It Happens

The most common place to enjoy this is at the Ryonggang Hot Spa Hotel, where it's often arranged as part of an evening barbecue experience. Popular spots within the hotel grounds include:
- Wooded BBQ pits across from the main reception
- Gravel pads outside guest chalets for private setups
- Open areas near the pool, great for groups
These spaces create an almost campsite-like feel: laid-back, smoky, and always with a bottle of soju nearby.
Safety and Etiquette
- Don't eat unopened clams—they might be undercooked.
- Use caution when handling hot shells.
- It's customary to toast with soju as part of the experience.
- Locals often say soju "kills the gasoline"—take that as tradition, not science.
Why It's Special
The gas clam BBQ is as much of a social ritual as it is a cooking method. It encourages conversation, laughter, and sharing, and is the perfect way to unwind after a long day on the road.
If you're headed to Nampo with Taedong Tours, don't miss the chance to gather around the fire, pass the soju, and taste a uniquely North Korean twist on seafood. It might be the most memorable meal of your trip.
