One of the first questions everyone asks when they hear you're planning a trip to North Korea is: Is it safe? And that's a fair question.

At Taedong Tours, safety is our absolute top priority. We've built our tours around that principle from day one. The Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK) is not a conventional travel destination, and we don't treat it like one. However, we also don't exaggerate the risks. The reality is simple: if you follow the rules, listen to your guides, and behave respectfully, visiting the DPRK is extremely safe.

Every tour we operate includes detailed briefings and essential information to prepare you properly for your visit. The DPRK is a country where the rules matter more than almost anywhere else. As a tourist, you are entering the country legally, and as long as you adhere to local laws and the guidance of your Korean hosts and Taedong Tours staff, you will not encounter problems.

The cases of foreigners being detained or punished in the DPRK are extremely rare, and they all share one common factor: the individual knowingly broke local laws, or behaved in a way considered deeply offensive to the Korean authorities. The penalties in such cases can be severe, often far beyond what would happen in other countries for similar offenses. That's why we believe in being transparent and upfront.

However, we also believe in cutting through the media noise and sensationalism. Members of our team have collectively organized and led many tours to the DPRK over the years, helping hundreds of travelers experience the country safely and responsibly. Our experience comes from years spent on the ground, long before we launched Taedong Tours, and that expertise is what we bring to every single trip we offer today. What we've consistently seen is that those who respect the rules, engage in the spirit of cultural exchange, and remain open-minded have safe, smooth, and truly unforgettable experiences.

We do encourage all travelers to check their own government's latest travel advisories regarding the DPRK before booking. Many governments, including the UK, Canada, and Australia, officially advise against "non-essential travel" to the DPRK, largely for political reasons. These advisories are worth reading, but it’s equally important to understand that they do not reflect the realities of traveling on a guided, legal tour with experienced professionals.

Our team has over a decade of combined experience in the country. We maintain regular communication with our local partners in Pyongyang, as well as foreign diplomatic missions based outside of Korea. Our guides are among the most knowledgeable and experienced in the industry, and every traveler joining one of our tours is required to attend a mandatory pre-tour briefing to ensure they are fully prepared.

The bottom line is this: You will not be in danger in the DPRK as long as you follow the rules and respect the country you are visiting.
