The Taedong River, called Taedonggang (대동강/大同江) in Korean, begins in Lake Changjin (장진호/長津湖) up in the Rangrim Mountains in the northeast, and flows through the Korean heartland. From its alpine source, it winds over 400 kilometers through South Hamgyong and South Pyongan Provinces before reaching the capital, Pyongyang, and finally emptying into the Yellow Sea (known as the West Sea in Korea) near the port city of Nampo.

Many of Pyongyang's most iconic landmarks can be found along the banks of the Taedong River or on islets within it. Kim Il Sung Square, the Juche Tower, Okryugwan, May Day Stadium, and the Taedonggang Beer Bar, all line the Taedong River. You may even find yourself spending your nights right on the river: the Yanggakdo Hotel, one of the city's main accommodations for foreign guests, is named after the island on which it stands in the middle of Taedonggang.

The River's Significance

For thousands of years, the Taedong River has been deeply woven into the story of Korean civilization. The ancient kingdom of Koguryo was founded along its shores, and traces of human settlement from the Neolithic and Bronze Ages still line its banks. Relics from Koguryo-era fortresses and tombs serve as lasting reminders that this river has long stood witness to Korea’s historical journey.

Throughout the centuries, the Taedong has served as a vital artery for transport and trade, especially across central Korea, linking inland communities to the coast and sustaining the capital's growth. Today, the Taedong remains central to public life: its riverside promenades often host national holidays, cultural events, and gatherings that bring the city to life.

Why Are We Called Taedong?

At Taedong Tours, our name is not only a a nod to Korean geography, but also a reflection of the ideal from which the river received its name. Taedong (대동) is the Korean reading of 大同, read "datong" in Standard Chinese. Both Datong and Taedong mean "Great Unity," an ancient philosophical concept shared between China, Korea, and some other East Asian countries.

This idea envisions a world where people live in peace, harmony, and mutual respect, free from division and misunderstanding. That's the spirit that guides everything we do.

Just as the Taedong River flows freely across Korea, connecting cities and town to the sea and one another, Taedong Tours exists to connect people across borders, cultures, and perspectives. We believe that traveling is an opportunity to share space, exchange ideas, and build understanding one interaction at a time.
